The Affordable Care Act made several changes to expand health insurance coverage to more Americans and defined the Essential Health Benefits needed in a qualified plan. You can find an ACA health insurance plan at the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace. For assistance in finding the plan that suits your needs and your budget, contact The Coleman Agency today.

Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010, expanded health insurance coverage and made coverage more affordable.

The act made a number of important changes, including providing coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, eliminating annual and lifetime dollar limits on health insurance coverage, and providing free preventive care. The act also allowed young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance coverage until they are 26 years old. Thanks to the ACA, people are allowed to compare their health insurance coverage options before selecting a plan. The ACA also made some cost savings available to more people by providing premium tax credits to people who qualify for lower health insurance costs and by increasing access to Medicaid.

While the plan made several changes to health insurance coverage, it also made coverage more accessible and easier to navigate. The act paved the way for the creation of a useful health insurance marketplace which you can use to compare health insurance plans and see if you are eligible for lower costs. The ACA also certifies plans which have all of the coverage standards set in the act.

Qualified Health Plans

Plans certified by the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace are called Qualified Health Plans (QHPs). These plans provide Essential Health Benefits. Essential Health Benefits include outpatient services; emergency services; hospitalization; pregnancy, maternity and newborn care; mental health and substance use disorder treatment; prescription drugs; rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices; laboratory services; preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management; and pediatric services for children.

Qualified Health Plans also have limits on cost-sharing and follow other requirements set forth by the ACA and your state.

The ACA Health Insurance Marketplace, which you can find at HealthCare.gov, allows you to compare certified health plans until you find one that fits your health care coverage needs and your budget. The website also has a function to apply for cost savings. If you qualify for lower health insurance costs, you have a good likelihood of being accepted for premium tax credits which can help lower your health insurance costs. You can also find out if you are eligible for Medicaid, which would further lower your health care costs.
